A Dry Idea
Abstract: Hard Copy Publication. This article describes the implementation of a waste solvent recovery system at Transcontinental Printing RBW Graphics in Ontario, Canada. Shop Towel On site Recycling (STOR,developed by Omega Recycling Technologies), is an integrated system that uses the production process? own solvent to clean shop towels for reuse and purifying the excess solvent also for reuse. Use of STOR has resulted in a net cost savings of $130,240 annually for RBW. Citation: Salerno, Cheryl. January 2002. A Dry Idea. CleanTech, 2(1): 26-29. Benchmark Life-Cycle Inventory and Impact Assessment of Sheet-fed Printing System Using Soy Based Ink
Abstract: Written by Duane A. Tolle, David P. Evers, and Bruce W. Vigon, this report discusses a study which was performed to document the life-cycle environmental impact characteristics associated with the use of soy-based inks by evaluating a typical ("generic") soy-based ink currently used in significant quantities for sheetfed printing. This typical soy-based ink printing system serves as a benchmark for future comparison with alternative ink formulations and other combinations of printing system materials. The life-cycle impact assessment (LCIA) included identification of specific processes in the streamlined life-cycle (core operations associated with material acquisition, manufacture, use, and disposal) of soy-based ink for sheetfed offset lithographic printing that make the greatest contribution to the overall environmental profile for the baseline soy ink printing system selected. The intent was to identify processes that could be modified to make reductions in environmental impact, thereby enhancing soy-based ink printing as an environmentally preferable choice. It should be noted that an LCIA is a hazard indicator system largely based on resource use and emission loading, and should not be construed to represent actual environmental impacts.

Multimedia Compliance/Pollution Prevention Assessment Guidance for Lithographic Printing Facilities [PDF]
Abstract: Includes a multimedia assessment protocol that utilizes a process-based approach in which the inspector identifies noncompliance with any applicable media or program specific regulation (air, water, solid waste) as well as pollution prevention and innovative technology opportunities as part of the assessment of individual printing processes. This assessment protocol serves as a reference for the conduct of these assessments, and includes procedures, an assessment checklist, and an example assessment report. It focuses on lithographic printing facilities only, and addresses prepress (image processing and platemaking), press (makeready and printing), and postpress (finishing) operations. An overview of lithographic printing processes is contained in Section 1 of this guidance. (PDF Format; 91 pages)
