Health Consultation: Mercury Spill Assist in Watervliet, Michigan

This Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry (ASTDR)/Michigan Department of Community Health consultation report outlines the case of a mercury spill in a home resulting from the replacement of a wall-mounted thermostat. The family’s two-year-child required admission to a hospital and extensive medical treatment due to accidental ingestion of beads of mercury. The report summarizes air monitoring in the home, biological sampling on the children involved, the temporary relocation of the family, and the removal and disposal of contaminated furniture, home items, carpeting and padding. Includes a section on “Addressing the Unique Vulnerabilities of Children.”
