2011 Case Study: Associated Purchasing Services

The Associated Purchasing Services (APS) hired intern Mikhail Marchenko to research environmentally preferred products (EPP) that would significantly reduce hospital waste emissions and to find hospitals that hold contracts with APS that have interest in expanding their use of EPPs. A tour of the facility and on-site data gathering was performed at three Kansas hospitals including Truman Medical Center, Newton Medical Center, and Kingman Community Hospital. Marchenko also drafted a Best Practice Guide, which APS hopes to finalize and publish as a tool for member hospitals interested in expanding their EPP programs. The suggested programs for Newman Medical Center and Kingman Community Hospital were predicted to save 52,743 kWh of electricity and 2,496 lbs of waste, which is equivalent to annual savings of $6,414.
