2013 Case Study: CST Storage

A worldwide leader in the production of metal storage tans, aluminum domes, and specialty covers, CST Industries is dedicated to improving its process as much as possible, including taking pollution prevention and waste reduction measures. During its third year of participating in the Pollution Prevention Institute's intern program, CST Storage in Parsons, Kansas hired intern Josie Doefer to work on several projects. The intern reviewed a newly purchased distiller, a project that had already been implemented, in order to determine the estimated annual cost savings associated with the project. Doefer also recommended that CST switch to Green Environmental for their cardboard recycling system, replace lighting with more efficient systems to reduce energy use, and to replace and fix the air and gas leaks throughout the plant. These recommended improvements were estimated to save CST up to $958,850 per year.
